I worked hard to overcome many obstacles in my life. I came to the United States at the age of 15 from Puerto Rico. I’ve always wanted to be an educator and I worked hard to earn my bachelor’s degree when the English language was a tremendous barrier. My English skills were weak during my first 6 years in the United States but I was able to graduate from Western Illinois University with a bachelor’s degree in Bilingual Bicultural Education. I continued to make improvements in the English language and became an educator in August of 1995.

In the spring of 2002, I decided to go back to school to pursue a master’s degree. I was able to complete the program and I earned a master’s degree in Business Administration from the University of Phoenix, Orlando Campus. It was proof that I was doing better with the language.

After completing the master’s degree, I decided to go back to college to receive a certificate of completion of the courses for educational leadership from Barry University. I believe that I worked hard at Barry University, even with some obstacles that I had to face from 2004 to 2006. During those years, I had a change of job, our first baby was born, our house was damaged by four hurricanes and I was hospitalized and out of work for a month because of bacteria that damaged my spinal cord. As a mentioned before, even with those obstacles, I was able to complete my certification program at Barry University to become a school administrator. Education is very important to me and I take the challenge any time that comes my way. Currently, I’m writing my dissertation to obtain a doctoral degree in Educational Leadership.

I have been working in the education field for more than 20 years. In the education field, I have worked as a bilingual teacher, an administrative dean, and assistant principal in a K-12 setting. At the college level, I have been a professor, program manager, assistant director and now the Director of Continuing International Education at Valencia College.
