Chief Petty Officer Sam “Terry” Spain Jr is a native of Conway, South Carolina. He received his Bachelor’s in Humanities at Thomas Edison State University in Trenton, New Jersey. He joined the Navy in February 1997. He has been assigned to various ships and bases to include the USS Inchon (MCS-12) Ingleside, Texas; Naval Air Maintenance Training Group (NAMTRAGRU HQ) Pensacola, Florida; Visual Support Center Sigonella, Sicily; Commander, U.S. Seventh Fleet (C7F), forward deployed aboard the USS Blue Ridge (LCC19) in Yokosuka, Japan; Naval Construction Battalion Center (NCBC), Gulfport, Mississippi; Joint Operation Task Force, Philippines; Headquarters, Naval District Washington (NDW) Washington, D.C.

He serves as an instructor and facilitator at the Defense Equal Opportunity Management Institute (DEOMI), Patrick Air Force Base, Florida. He trains and educates senior military and civilian leaders on the Department of Defense Equal Opportunity (EO) Program, its policies, procedures, and issues that affect the EO climate in their organization. He also educates senior leaders with the information and skills necessary to prevent, identify, and deal with instances of unlawful discrimination, and other EO violations.

Terry serves as a mentor to young men and women at the Brevard Regional Juvenile Center and Big brother/ Big sister organization, assisting and developing their life skills and goals.

His awards include the Joint Service Commendation Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal, Army Achievement medal, Military Outstanding Volunteer Service Medal, The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) Roy Wilkins Renown Service Award, Enlisted Surface Warfare Specialist Insignia and various campaign and unit awards.
